Why I wrote An American Spy in Iran :

I have written An American Spy in Iran as told by Roy. Though it is based to a large extent on the lives and experiences of people I have known, this novel is fiction from beginning to end. The locations and historical incidents described, however, are real.
If you ever have the opportunity, I strongly recommend a visit of at least a week’s duration to the city of Bamberg, Germany. I was stationed there immediately after the World War II hostilities and was very impressed, not only by the beauty and history of this old city, but the attitudes of the people living there. They were just recovering from the horrors of Nazi rule which was hard, not only on the people in the countries the Nazis occupied, but on the citizens of Germany themselves (at least those who weren’t converted to the Nazi movement).
Here were the friendliest people I had met in Europe. They had been our enemies but welcomed the U.S. Army as their liberators. Though I didn’t become involved with a German girl as did many of my buddies (I had one waiting at home), I did watch many romances develop and many German girls emigrate to the United States (as ‘war brides’ and at Army expense) to assume their roles as wives of American soldiers.
While I am sure that many of these marriages did not survive, all the ones I personally knew of did; they were very good marriages. Our unit had a ‘reunion’ about once every five years and, unlike many Army reunions, the wives were always invited — in fact, urged — to attend. And most did. Unfortunately the surprise attack in Korea was very hard on our unit and we had a lot of widows. We tried to include them but that is very difficult. It serves as a reminder of the husbands they lost and yet we didn’t want them to feel left out because their husbands were no longer among the living.
